Special Needs Training: Autism Spectrum Disorders

Autism Spectrum Disorders are a group of developmental disorders often associated with poor social interaction, language and behavior.

Symptoms to be aware of are:

  • Poor eye contact
  • Resists cuddling or holding
  • Prefers to be alone
  • Speaks with abnormal tone or a singsong voice
  • Word repetition
  • Repetitive movements
  • Change in routine can be disruptive
  • Constantly on the move
  • May be sensitive to light, sound or touch
  • May have poor coordination
  • Low muscle tone
  • Physical contact may prove difficult with some but very beneficial with others.

Exercises:

  • Agility ladder to improve balance and coordination.
  • Crawling patterns to develop core strength and motor control.
  • Stability ball to address stimulus and improve focus. Postural conditioning.
  • Trampoline and bosu ball as a reward and to further develop core control.
