Special Needs Training: Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a chronic disorder normally associated with hyperactivity and impulsive behavior.

ADHD falls into two categories: Inattention and Hyperactivity-impulsive behavior

Symptoms of Inattention are:

  • Difficulty with attention while at play
  • Difficulty following through with instructions
  • Easily distracted
  • Seems not to listen when spoken to

Symptoms of Hyperactivity-impulsiveness are:

  • Fidgets or squirms frequently
  • Difficulty playing quietly
  • Unfocused energy resulting in running or climbing when inappropriate
  • Talks excessively
  • Always on the move

Exercises:

  • Circuit based training with short intervals of work followed by running or jumping.
  • Utilize the running and jumping to fill the need for movement then try to perform specific task (squats, pushups, sit ups).
  • Must be willing to change on the fly and recognize the planned program may not work that day.
